GSKi WEEK ON END TO VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN QUARTERLY CHAT WITH STREET CHILDREN AND YOUTHS AT RISK

August 22nd 2024, being Thursday GSKi Nigeria had the grand finale of her week long program brought with very impactful interactions with street connected children and some youths at risk in  Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun, and Fayose, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti States. These engagements, focused on the theme quarterly chat with street connected children and youths at risk, where the pressing issue of drug abuse among children and youths was emphasized.

The events were attended by a diverse group of participants, including 86 vulnerable children and youths, 20 dedicated community actors, GSKi staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders. Among the distinguished guests was Inspector Oyewole Meshack from Railway Police Station, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, we have always worked in synergy with the Police and other law-enforcement agencies in addressing issues affecting children.

The day’s activities were centered on the critical topic of “Drug Abuse,” a growing concern that directly impacts the safety and well-being of children and youths in our communities. The discussions were designed to be interactive, engaging the participants in a deep exploration of the dangers associated with drug abuse, its link to violence, and the broader implications on their future.

During the sessions, GSKi’s staff employed a variety of methods to ensure that the messages resonated with the attendees. Through storytelling, real-life examples, and open dialogue, the children and youths were encouraged to share their experiences and ask questions. This approach not only made the discussion more relatable but also empowered the participants to speak openly about the challenges they face in their daily lives.

One of the highlights of the event was the question and answer session, where the children and youths had the opportunity to voice their concerns and seek guidance. The facilitators, along with Inspector Meshack and the community actors, provided thoughtful and practical responses, offering advice on how to resist peer pressure, avoid drug-related activities, and seek help when needed.

The interactions were more than just a discussion; they were a lifeline for many of the participants who are often overlooked in the broader societal discourse. By addressing the issue of drug abuse head-on, GSKi Nigeria aimed to equip these vulnerable children and youths with the knowledge and tools they need to make positive life choices and steer clear of violence.

As the day progressed, the atmosphere shifted from one of serious contemplation to one of celebration. After the formal discussions concluded, the participants gathered for a series of group photos, capturing the essence of the day—unity, hope, and a collective commitment to ending violence against children. These moments were followed by a refreshment session, where everyone shared in light-hearted conversations, reinforcing the sense of community and support that GSKi Nigeria strives to foster.

GSKi Nigeria remains committed to its mission of creating safe spaces for children and advocating for their rights. The success of this event is a testament to the organization’s dedication and the collaborative efforts of all involved. As GSKi Week 2024 comes to a close, the organization looks forward to continuing its work, ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
