Parenting is both a biological and social process, the training given to a child; to a large extent determine his or her self concept. The parenting style of individual also determines how the child will adjust to the society emotionally. We have different types of families which are; the two parent homes, single parent homes and the polygamy, in these homes there are different styles of parenting being used which in one way or another affects the children in the society. Physical abuse, neglect, emotional abuse and sexual abuse are the most serious and damaging behavior traits that most of us equate with bad parenting which needs an urgent attention when such happens.

“The key functions of a child’s family are to raise the young person in a healthy manner as possible (Bornstein 2005). A parent role is to provide the child with safe, secure, nurturing, loving as well support the child’s environment as one that allows the offspring have a happy and healthy youth life. This sort experience allows the child develop in knowledge, value, attitude and behavior necessary to become an adult, making a productive contribution to self, family, community and the world at large. What a parent does to fulfill these duties is ‘parenting’. Parenting is a term summarizes behavior of a person usually mother or father in the process of raising a child given to the family.

Numerous studies have shown that the home environment has a powerful effect on what children learn, not only in school but also outside school. This environment is considered more powerful than parent’s income and education in influencing what children learn in the first six years of life. Major reason why parental influence is so strong is because the children spend more than ninety percent of their time from infancy throughout their childhood under the influence of their parent. Ultimately parents are the first and most important teacher of a child. “Children look at parents to define what boundaries are and the consequences that can occur if the child crosses the boundaries” (Sharron Frederick)

Poor parenting have been identified as a major problem because many parent believe the best way to groom a child is by being authoritative, autocratic, oppressive and comparing a child to one another. Children without positive parenting are more at risk for their own relationship troubles, depression, anxiety, and aggression among other negative outcomes.

Signs of poor parenting are when a parent withhold affection, all advice; no encouragement, lack of support, not setting rules, comparing your child, not proud of his/her achievements, disciplining child in front of everyone, reprimanding the child excessively.

Effects of bad parenting on children causes’ psychological disorder to a child, inability to have long lasting friendships and relationships, depression and low self esteem, makes a child prone to criminal behaviors also lead to poor performance in school. Children exposed to poor parenting are more likely to be withdrawn and stressed this negatively affects their performance.

What you can do to stop bad parenting? Firstly, listen to your child’s thoughts and feelings, provide appropriate consequences, and label the behavior; not the child, don’t withhold attention, show love and affection, and let them make mistakes. “the best inheritance a parent can give his children is a few minutes of his time each day.”- O.A. Battista.

Being a parent is emotionally challenging It’s also a huge responsibility that requires patience, consistency, love, compassion and understanding. Global Support for Kids Initiative urges every parent out there to be a good role model/ ambassador to their children because the future of our wards is in our hands.

  1. Hello, you used to write great, but the last few posts have been kinda boring… I miss your great writings. Past few posts are just a bit out of track! come on!

  2. Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any tips and hints for beginner blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
