Global Support for Kids Initiative (GSKi) Nigeria has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of vulnerable children and youths, as the organization successfully carried out a Basic Life Skills training program for 40 street-connected children and youths at risk in Ado-Ekiti & Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The impactful one-day Life Skill training event held simultaneously at Agric Olope Market, behind Chief Imam House, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and at Olomoore Playing Ground, Olomoore, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday May 20, 2026, bringing hope, practical knowledge, and a pathway to self-reliance to dozens of young lives often overlooked by the society.
The training which centered on barbing as a vocational life skill was designed to equip street-connected children and at-risk youths with hands-on, marketable skills capable of fostering financial independence and entrepreneurship. The initiative reflects GSKi Nigeria’s broader mission of creating sustainable opportunities for the most marginalized members of society particularly children and young people living and working on the streets.

A total of 39 participants benefited from the program across both locations, engaging in practical interactive sessions that introduced them to the fundamentals of hair cutting, grooming techniques, and the business potential of the barbing trade.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and professional generosity, the training was facilitated by seasoned professionals in the field who volunteered their time, expertise, and resources to give back to the society.
In Ado-Ekiti, Mr. Olusola Kehinde of Double Six Barbing Salon, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, led the session with enthusiasm and patience, guiding participants through practical demonstrations and hands-on practice. In Abeokuta, Mr. Michael Anifowose of Olu Omo Barbing Salon, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun State, took charge of the session at Olomoore, offering the same quality of mentorship and professional insight to the youths in attendance.
Both facilitators were commended for their dedication and passion in nurturing the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Participants described the sessions as lively, engaging, and eye-opening. Beyond the technical aspects of barbing, the children and youths were also encouraged to view skill acquisition as a sustainable and dignifying source of income a powerful counter-narrative to street life and vulnerability.
The sessions were structured to be interactive, allowing participants to ask questions, practice under supervision, and gain confidence in their ability to learn and apply a trade. Facilitators also took time to motivate and inspire the young participants, emphasizing that a skill learned today could become a thriving business tomorrow.
GSKi Nigeria’s Basic Life Skills program is rooted in the belief that vocational training is a powerful tool for social transformation. By targeting street-connected children and at-risk youth population that are often excluded from formal education and economic opportunities the organization is working to break cycles of poverty and vulnerability with a bottom up approach.
The initiative aligns with global sustainable development goals around quality education, decent work, and reduced inequalities, translating these ideals into tangible, community-level action.
GSKi Nigeria continues to call on individuals, corporate organizations, government agencies, and well-meaning members of the public to support her ongoing programs aimed at uplifting vulnerable children and youths across Nigeria. Through partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteerism, more lives can be transformed one skill at a time.
