GSKi Nigeria Raises Alarm on Drug Abuse among Street Children in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and in Abeokuta, Ogun State

Global Support for Kids Initiative (GSKi) Nigeria has taken a bold step in the fight against drug abuse by engaging street-connected children and at-risk youths in a sensitization outreach at Agric Olope Market, located behind Chief Imam House, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and at Brewery Playing ground in Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun State on the 22nd of April, 2026.

The outreach that brought together 40 street connected-children and youths was aimed at creating awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and its devastating effects on the health of individuals and the peace of any given community.

Drug abuse continues to pose a serious threat to Nigerian society, fueling mental health crises, family breakdown, financial ruin, and a rise in criminal activities as victims struggle to sustain addictive lifestyles. Concerned by this growing menace, GSKi Nigeria mobilized her staff to bring the message of hope and harm prevention directly to some of the most vulnerable members of the society.

Upon arrival at the venues, GSKi staff displayed a banner that immediately drew the attention of the gathered children and youths. The staff mentioned harmful effects of drug abuse including mental instability, poor skin condition, memory loss, and financial ruin. The staff simplified the means of communication so that all and sundry will eventually benefit by the use of both Yoruba and Hausa languages ensuring no one was left out.

Beyond verbal communication, GSKi staff employed dramatization as a teaching tool, bringing the message to life in a way that was engaging, relatable, and easy to understand. The interactive approach ensured that every participant regardless of literacy level could grasp the core message.

The staff emphasized that while breaking free from substance addiction is a difficult journey, it is achievable through gradual steps, self-determination, and discipline. Those yet to experiment with drugs were strongly advised to stay away, to avoid falling victim to the consequences highlighted during the session. The event concluded on a warm note, with all participants receiving refreshments and group photographs taken to mark the occasion.

GSKi Nigeria has come to the conclusion that there is a place of education in the fight against this monster, if of a truth we hope to overcome the menace of drug abuse amongst these most vulnerable members of the society.

The participants were assured that this campaign has come to stay, since the organization will always want to see to the mental well-being of all the children we are working with.
