THEME: Fostering Inclusion: Changing community perception towards the street connected children

On the 20th of August 2023, during GSK Initiative Week, an inspiring movement took place at religious centre’s to advocate for the end of violence against children. This movement, centered on the belief that every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment, found its voice within the walls of both local churches and mosques at Gofamint Mount Zion chapel ijeuntitun Abeokuta, Central Mosque of Islamic community oke-ilewo Abeokuta Ogun state and The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Wonder’s Assembly, Omisanjana, and Arowolo Mosque km2, Ikere Road, Arowolo Street, Off Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Through a series of powerful discussions, participants united under a shared goal: to protect the future of our children and create a world free from violence.

GSK Initiative Week brought together people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, recognizing the pivotal role that religious institutions play in shaping societal values. GSK initiative harnessed the power of the church and mosque to amplify the message against violence targeting children. Participants understood that their collective voices, guided by faith and compassion, could create lasting change.

At the heart of the movement were conversations that challenged norms and fostered understanding. Both religious settings became platforms for dialogue on the importance of safeguarding children’s well-being. Leaders of each religious institution in person of PASTOR EMMANUEL OJO represented by PASTOR MRS EMMANUEL OJO, PASTOR DARE OKE and CHIEF MISSIONER ALHAJI JUBRIL LAWAL and ALHAJI MUHAMMED SOLIU (IYONUOLOHUN) highlighted the significance of nurturing an environment where children can thrive without fear. Congregants and attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions, reflecting on the role each individual plays in building a safer world for the younger generation.

GSK Initiative Week was a time for heightened awareness as Brochures, posters, and informative sessions were designed to educate children and adults about the various forms of violence children face and how to identify and report it. By providing concrete information and resources, the initiative empowered individuals to take action and protect children from harm.

One of the most striking aspects of GSK Initiative Week was the interfaith collaboration it fostered. Leaders from both the church and mosque joined forces to advocate for children’s rights, proving that the commitment to safeguarding children transcends religious boundaries. The initiative sent a powerful message that people can come together, regardless of their background, to stand against violence and cruelty.

As the advocacy program came to a close, the participants were inspired to continue their advocacy beyond the event. This movement became a catalyst for ongoing efforts to raise awareness about violence against children and to provide support to those in need. Church and mosque communities pledged to remain vigilant, report any signs of abuse, and create safe spaces for children to flourish.

GSK Initiative Week advocacy for ending violence against children in church and mosque settings demonstrated the potent combination of faith, awareness, and action. By leveraging the influence of religious institutions, this movement succeeded in rallying individuals around a common goal to protect and nurture the youngest members of society.
