The Global Support for Kids Initiative (GSKi), in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) Gender Unit to mark this year’s Children’s Day with a strong call for renewed action against child abuse on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The outreach, themed “Protecting Our Children: Say No to Child Abuse,” was held at David Oke Model Secondary School, Off Ikere Road, Ado-Ekiti, bringing together students, teachers, GSKi staff and NSCDC officers, including the Commandant, to spotlight the need to safeguard children’s rights and welfare.
Speaking at the event, Commandant Matthew Toma commended the organizers for what he described as a timely and compassionate intervention, calling it a “sensitive programme dedicated to the welfare and well-being of children.” He urged students to speak up whenever their rights are violated, stressing that protecting children must be treated as a national duty and a collective responsibility.

In an address to the students, the GSKi team introduced the organization’s mission and the purpose of the outreach, while also delivering a lecture on child rights. The presentation traced the foundations of modern child protection policies to the 1989 United Nations Convention, noting subsequent adoption efforts in 1990 by UNICEF and the African Union aimed at improving children’s quality of life. Basic child rights were also highlighted with practical examples to help students identify violations and understand where to seek help.
Also speaking, Mrs. Adeyemo .M. Head of the NSCDC Gender Unit, focused on child protection and awareness, explaining common forms of abuse — emotional, physical and psychological — and urging children to report threats or harmful experiences promptly. According to her, improving awareness remains one of the most effective tools for prevention, as it helps children recognize danger and empowers communities to act early.

The programme ended with a renewed call for joint action from parents, schools, law enforcement and community stakeholders. Organizers emphasized that every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment to grow and thrive, making child protection a shared responsibility across society.
