Due to their marginalised social status, lack of official citizenship, limited knowledge of their rights, many street children are made more vulnerable by increasing the difficulty in accessing clean water, food, clean air, and proper education.
Street-connected children are less able to adjust to extreme weather, such as heat waves or heavy rain. Also, these children make up a sizable portion of the street vendor population. Heart attacks, acute respiratory illnesses, heat-related dehydration, and water-borne infections are all risks that are heightened by sudden temperature changes experienced by children on the streets as a result of climate change. Additionally, as a result of climate change, there is a higher chance of fires, heat waves, and heat-amped levels of smog that could aggravate respiratory conditions, especially in children who lack proper shelter and live on the streets.
In addition to this, street connected children may be unable to make their daily living due to illnesses and physical limitations caused by the aftermath of climate change such as flooding. There is also a heightened danger of malnutrition and food shortage due to the hike in food prices during drought and severe rainfall.People and families in rural areas affected by climate change frequently live in abject poverty and are in desperate need of assistance. People who are in considerable distress about their existing circumstances and looking for better possibilities may be prey to traffickers who promise them greatly improved prospects in cities or the US. The chances they were promised, however, rarely materialise and may push them further into debt, squalor, and exploitation. Since many people believe they will always be homeless and lose everything they ever had, they turn to the streets as their place of residence.
Another major impact of climate change on street connected children is the displacement as a result of natural disasters. Due to the impact of these natural disasters, families of street children are forced to relocate in order to survive. Children of migrants are frequently overlooked by child protection services and are more susceptible to violence. The lack of family support and social networks brought on by forced relocation causes the street child to lose his or her sense of place. The challenge of losing one’s identity, the emotional trauma brought on by abrupt changes in one’s life brought on by natural disasters, and the difficulties in gaining access to effective psychosocial care are added to this.
In conclusion, the climate change and environmental challenges have significant impact on the welfare of children, and those who are on the streets are most affected. There is an urgent need to provide shelter, education and medical assistance to children in areas most affected by climate change or experiencing natural or environmental disasters.
