On Tuesday 25th October 2022, Global Support for Kids Initiative empowered parents of her OVC (orphan and vulnerable children) beneficiaries with Sewing and grinding machines alongside capital to start up, as a way to alleviate poverty in our society.

The program which took place at GSK INITIATIVE head office, Ado- Ekiti, was organized to help reduce the rate at which the children run to the street from home due to the inability of their parents to cater for their basic needs. The items provided by the organization are meant to proffer a sustainable financial livelihood for the families of the beneficiaries most especially their children. Those who benefited from this year’s empowerment program were: Mrs. Elizabeth Salami, Mrs. Funke Talabi, Mrs. Bosede Mathew, Mrs. Damilola Olaosebikan and Mrs. Sefunmi Olatunji.

Mr. Opeyemi Olowookere, the Executive Director represented by the country director Adebisi Olamiposi said; ‘the reason for today’s empowerment was born out of the fact that we genuinely care about our OVC beneficiary’s welfare and wellbeing. We implore the beneficiaries never to forget the reason they are empowered today which is to support their family needs most especially that of their children’.

She further explains that, ‘the current economy situation of the country has affected vulnerable children pushing them out to the street just to survive the day, neglecting their basic education. As such, this empowerment program will help parent carry out their responsibilities on their children by providing their basic needs like; food, clothing, hygiene product also educational needs giving the children the opportunity to excel academically’.

The Director of women affairs, Mrs Caroline Modupe Aluko ably represented by Mr Tolu Oguniyi in his speech said  “Empower a woman, empower a nation” he advised them to make use of the opportunity given effectively for the betterment and happiness of their children, which should be their main focus and priority.

The program had the presence of Directors from Child Protection Network Ekiti chapter and, Civil Society on Hiv/Aids in Nigeria Ekiti chapter also Mrs Abimbola Adegboyega from Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State.

Presentation of the empowerment items were given to each beneficiary, while they all showed their appreciation for the opportunity given to them, they promise never to take it for granted and also not neglecting the reason they have been empowered.
