INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR GIRL CHILD

THEME: OUR TIME IS NOW- OUR RIGHT, OUR FUTURE

GLOBAL SUPPORT FOR KIDS INITIATIVE celebrate the 10th year INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE GIRL CHILD. Theme: Our time is now- Our rights, Our future with the girls at Trinity Comprehensive High School IJAIYE, ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE and United High School ILAWE ADO EKITI, EKITI STATE. The day which is set aside to sensitize the girl child on her rights in the society and as well give them hope to become future leaders, policy makers and good mothers had the presence of the Ministry of women affairs and social development services also the presence of female prominent dignitaries from different sectors who took out time to enlighten the girls on their rights and how they can be of positive impact to the world.

The event which started with the Executive Director MR Opeyemi Olowookere’S speech represented by the Country Director Adebisi Olamiposi and the Program Officer Abiola Oyefeso. We had health talk on personal hygiene by Nurse Babatunde from the Federal Medical Center and Mrs Igbalajobi from Ekiti teaching hospital. Further, the Director Becky wren’s world Mrs Adejumo Okubukola one of the leading entrepreneurs in south west had discussion on “self-development” with the girls alongside Chief Gbenga Agbona, the Elemo of Oke- Emo who discussed on the “value of self-development”.

Olamiposi Adebisi and Abiola Oyefeso introduced the organization and their service to humanity, they also made the girls know their rights, stating that every child has the right to survival, protection, development and participation, also the basic rights of a child are; right to life, freedom of association, right to identity, right to communicate, right to privacy, right to good health, freedom of discrimination and right to education. Every child must be protected against all forms of exploitation, indecent or degrading treatment, including child abuse, torture, sexual exploitation and drug abuse, They said.

The staff of the organization Bukola Akinola and Benson Usin Etim discussed with the girls on international day for girl child stating the challenges girl child faced in the time past which brought about the campaign at the world conference in the year 1995 and was inaugurated by the UN general assembly on the 11th October,2012 because they see the need for a girl child to enjoy her rights and be an active part in the progress of the world.

Other dignitaries present were Dr and Mrs. Olowookere , Child protection network, Mrs. M.O Alagbe Junior school principal Trinity comprehensive high school, Mrs. Aboluade Vice principal United high school, Mrs Oyewunmi Vice principal senior school United high school, Pastor Buyide Alabi, Miss Chichi from Civil society association.

The event was educative and entertaining as the girls engaged in various game activities which includes passing the box, quiz questions, dancing round the chair, kinetics, cash prizes and gift items were given to the winners of the game.
