Adeyemi Lekan a street connected child of LAFENWA Abeokuta Ogun State, who is one of Global Support for Kids Initiative OVC (orphan and vulnerable) beneficiary learning Vulcanizing. Lekan at age 16 was found on the street of LAFENWA by Global Support for Kids Initiative on the 1st September, 2020. He was seen sleeping under a pedestrian bridge, GSK Initiative walked up to him, created a friendly atmosphere for him in order to be free and gain trust with the organization. GSK Initiative along the line engaged in an interactive session with him, he said; “I am from a family of 5, the first born of my parent, my parent are separated and things became hard for us. we find it very hard to feed ourselves, I could not withstand the hardship at home that is why I decided to come out to the street to find myself a means of survival. I have been on the street since the year 2018”. The organization asked how he survives on the street he said; “I engage in scavenging and other menial jobs to fend for myself”.
GSK Initiative from then, engaged Lekan with the organization activities which includes; psychosocial activities, literacy class, interactive and counselling sessions. During our sessions with him the representatives tried to do his home tracing all efforts proved abortive. The organization also provide feeding, clothing, footwears, hygiene products for him. Lekan who is one of our streets connected children who we have been working with since 2020 till date is seen to be reserved, hardworking, funny and open minded.
In the year 2021 September, Lekan showed interest in learning Vulcanizing, he said; ‘I want a better life for myself so I wish to learn a vocation’. As an organization that listen to children, take their views serious and promote their interest, he was enrolled at a vulcanizing shop in LAFENWA area, his apprenticeship fee was paid and proper documentation was done. Lekan has been doing wonderfully well at his place of work based on remark from his boss MR SABITU and organization representative who pays a weekly visitation to his vocational Centre. The organization provide Lekan with weekly allowances for his upkeep in order to encourage him.
On the 15th August 2022, the organization carried out a home tracing for Lekan, we met with his mother and had a deep discussion with her, Adeyemi Lekan was re-integrated back home on this day and proper check up is done by the staff of the organization to make sure he is safe and well taken care of at home.
Lekan will be graduating from his vocational training center on the 16th of December 2022, all equipment’s and graduation requirements to start up his business was provided by Global Support for Kids Initiative. Lekan will be out of the street and now has a sustainable business to cater for himself and his siblings.
